Elon Musk appoints Linda Yaccarino, NBCU ad exec, as new CEO of Twitter

Elon Musk has made a surprise announcement on Twitter, revealing that NBCUniversal's head of ad sales Linda Yaccarino will be taking over as Twitter's new CEO. Musk, who has been at the helm of the social media giant since October, will be stepping down to focus on product design and new technology, becoming Twitter's chief technical officer and executive chair. Yaccarino is expected to start her new role in about six weeks.
This move comes amid reports that many of Twitter's top advertisers have temporarily stopped spending ad dollars on the platform due to concerns about their ads appearing next to hate speech and misinformation. Yaccarino's expertise in business operations and her previous success in expanding NBCU's partnership with Twitter for the 2024 Olympic Games could help Twitter to smooth over its fractured relationships with some advertisers.
Since taking over Twitter, Musk's tenure has been chaotic, with swift firings, layoffs, and plans to purge inactive accounts. In December, he posted a poll asking users if he should remain as CEO or bring someone else in, with the majority voting in favor of him stepping down. Musk promised to do just that and focus on the technical side of Twitter's operations as soon as he could find someone to take over. It seems he has stuck by his word, and stockholders seem pleased that he may be able to devote more time to Tesla, which has been falling behind on its goal of delivering 1.8 million vehicles this year.
